Youth Court Meaning

Similar to adult magistrates' courts, youth courts are responsible for hearing cases involving offenders between the ages of 10 and 17. However, the proceedings in youth courts differ in some ways from those in adult courts. It is presided over by a subset of experienced adult magistrates with specialised training or a district judge. The general public is not permitted to see the proceedings; rather, only those directly engaged in a case are allowed in. Additionally, youth courts typically have a less formal atmosphere with fewer legal professionals and more involvement from trained youth volunteers.

Sentencing in Youth Court

Youth magistrates have access to a broader range of dispositions for dealing with juvenile offenders and frequently hear more serious cases against juveniles. For instance, youth courts aim to rehabilitate young offenders and prevent them from committing future crimes, rather than primarily punishing them for their offenses. Despite these differences, youth courts continue to be an essential part of the criminal justice system, helping to address and prevent criminal behavior among young people.
