OSCOLA Referencing Generator

What is oscola?

The Oxford Standard for Citation of Legal Authorities (OSCOLA) was created at Oxford University and is extensively used to cite sources by law schools and publishers. There are two unbreakable rules for citing legal authorities:

  1. Consistency is one.

  2. The other is courtesy to the reader.

Legal writing is more compelling when the author makes obvious, consistent, and familiar references to legal materials. When the author's sources are readily identifiable and accessible, it becomes easier for the reader to follow the argument. OSCOLA referencing is intended to assist writers in maintaining consistency and to simplify the reader's life.

HOW TO CREATE A OSCOLA CITATION

When using the OSCOLA reference generator the author's name should be included in the same format as it appears in the book, with the exception of the bibliography, which should only include the last name followed by the initials (s). Before mentioning the publisher, provide any pertinent information regarding editions, translators, and other contributors. Page numbers should be included at the very end of the citation, following the brackets.
