Ultra vires

Ultra vires Meaning

The Latin word "ultra vires" means "beyond the powers," hence the phrase means "beyond the powers." In a legal setting, it alludes to choices or acts taken by a party that exceed its statutory rights or powers. When an organisation violates the law, it is doing so by acting in a manner that is outside the bounds of the authority granted to it. For instance, any activities conducted by a firm that do not support the specified aims set out in its articles of incorporation would be regarded as supra vires. Similar to this, a government entity's acts may also be considered ultra vires if they go beyond the legal power provided to them. As a result, the idea of ultra vires serves as a safeguard to make sure that organisations stay within their established bounds and to deter unauthorised use of power or authority.
