WHAT IS the lpc?

The Legal Practice Course (LPC) is a one-year programme (or two years if completed part-time) that, upon completion of an eligible law degree, enables graduates to take the first step towards a career as a solicitor. Graduates who have completed the programme with a passing grade are granted the qualifications necessary to begin working in the legal field. While the University of Law, BPP, and Kaplan Law School (more commonly known as Nottingham) are considered to be the primary providers of the LPC, the programme is actually provided by as many as 27 schools on an annual basis. Many students who are enrolled in the LPC already have training contracts lined up, which are contingent on their successful completion of the LPC. There are also many more people who enrol in the course with the expectation of securing a training contract in the future and, as a result, feel the pressure to do exceptionally well. Nonetheless, each year a significant number of students unnecessarily fail or struggle to complete this course. Your chances of passing the LPC will almost certainly go up if you get assistance from a knowledgeable and well regarded professional law tutor who has years of teaching expertise.

Do LPC grades matter?

When you get through the automated filters, companies will look at your academics as a "package." Good results on the LPC do reflect dedication and competence, and they can help offset grades received on A-level exams. However, this will not get you past the automated filter that some companies use to determine whether or not applicants have A-levels.

SKILLS assessment exercises

The LPC is not just about training you in law or in procedure. To become a successful lawyer, you will need to master the skills of the profession. This is especially so in a profession that is becoming less dichotomised between solicitors and barristers, leaving more room for solicitors to become highly polished advocates or negotiators. Firms value these skills more and more so that they can undertake more work in-house, and they therefore require their future trainees to work hard at them as well as the more established solicitor skills. The LPC therefore requires you to complete a number of skills assessments for which our law tutor is waiting to help you with any:

  • Advocacy: Skeleton Arguments, Applications for summary judgment, No Case to Answer, Strike Out and Relief from Sanctions

  • Interviewing and Advising: Preparing Questions, Attendance Note and Case Analysis

ELECTIVES

Electives give LPC candidates the opportunity to cake courses in subjects in which they are actually interested and which will benefit their chosen careers. This interest does not always translate into aptitude and many LPC candidates tell us that they actually find the electives more difficult than the core modules. This is because the aspects which drew them to the chosen subject were more abstract - and the legal professional courses are anything but abstract. The course is designed to ensure that you hit your training contract on the ground running. Electives are always assessed with written essay based questions and tasks. Because our law tutor has a diverse legal knowledge and practical experience this will allow him to both understand the specifics whilst seeing the bigger picture. Our specialist tutor is comfortable to help with:

  • Advanced Commercial Litigation

  • Advanced Civil Litigation

  • Advanced Criminal Litigation

  • Employment Law
