The Justice of the Peace is a kind of magistrate who is also a layman; this indicates that they do not have legal training. The most minor charges that are classified as "summary offences," such as speeding, reckless driving, and disturbing the peace, are handled by justices who either sit alone or in benches of three. These hearings may take place anywhere from one to three minutes. The judges in a courtroom have access to the help of attorneys who act in the position of either legal advisers or clerks of court.
