In personam

In personam meaning

In personam is a Latin phrase that is often used in the area of law to denote a legal action or duty that is aimed against a particular person or entity. This phrase comes from the Latin phrase "in persona," which means "in the person of." The term "personal jurisdiction" is used in the law to describe the authority that a court has over an individual, often within the confines of a certain geographical area. In personam procedures are those that are brought against a specific defendant with the intention of establishing and enforcing legal rights or responsibilities. Personal injury claims, breaches of contract, and questions related to property rights are common examples of the kind of situations that might give rise to such legal proceedings. As opposed to pursuing a judgement against a piece of property, which is a right in rem (in the property), the objective of an action brought in personam is to bind the defendant personally.
