Head of Criminal Justice
Head of Criminal Justice meaning
The Head of Criminal Justice was formerly held by the Lord Chief Justice, but created as a separate post following changes to the role by the Constitutional Reform Act 2005. Section 8 establishes a new statutory office of Head of Criminal Justice, which shall be held ex officio by the Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales or, following consultation with the Lord Chancellor, by his nomination. This job was brought into existence as a result of the amendments made by Section 8. Moreover, the Lord Chief Judge has the authority to designate a Deputy Head of Criminal Justice according to the provisions of this section. The current statutory roles of Head and Deputy Head of Civil Justice, which were established by section 62 of the Courts Act 2003, will be analogous to the newly created posts of Head and Deputy Head of Civil Justice.
