De jure
de jure meaning
The phrase "de jure" comes from Latin and literally translates to "by law" or "by right." This statement is used to denote a practise that occurs by right or in accordance with the law. When used in today's context, the term nearly invariably refers to the phrase "as a matter of law." The term "de facto" is often contrasted with the legal term de jure. The phrase de facto refers to a situation that really exists, despite the fact that it is not formally recognised. In contrast to this, the term de jure refers to a situation that is in compliance with the law (i.e. that is officially sanctioned).
