Civil
civil meaning
Disputes that arise between private individuals or organisations are governed by civil law, which is also referred to as private law (e.g. companies). It is therefore distinct from instances that deal with issues pertaining to interactions between private parties and the state, also known as public law and criminal law.
What is Civil Law?
Civil law is a legal system that deals with private relationships between individuals, such as property ownership, contracts, torts, and family law matters. It is one of the two main legal systems in the world, alongside common law. Civil law aims to provide a framework for resolving disputes between individuals, usually through a court system. It is governed by a comprehensive system of codes and statutes that set out the legal rules and principles applicable to different areas of civil law. Civil law is generally distinct from criminal law, which deals with offences against the state, and administrative law, which regulates government activities and public law.
