Circuit judge meaning

Circuit judge is a judge who sits in the County Court and/or the Crown Court. A judge who is in control of (presides over) matters that are being heard in the County Court as well as district tribunals. Some circuit judges focus exclusively on criminal or civil cases, others are authorised to hear public and/or private law family matters, and still others serve in multiple jurisdictions simultaneously.

Difference between a circuit judge and district judge

The main difference between a circuit judge and a district judge lies in their jurisdiction. Circuit judges hear more serious cases that require longer hearings and involve complex legal issues. They are also authorised to handle cases that are beyond the competence of district judges, such as jury trials. On the other hand, district judges deal with less serious cases such as civil disputes that have a value of less than £100,000 and family-related matters. They usually deal with cases that can be resolved within a day. Circuit judges are generally considered to be more experienced than district judges due to the complex nature of the cases they handle.
