Chambers meaning

Chambers can mean:

(i) Private room, or Court from which the public are excluded in which a District Judge or Judge may conduct certain sorts of hearings. A judge's room when used for hearing cases not taken in open court and a private chamber for judicial proceedings that are held behind closed doors.

(ii) Offices used by a barrister. The word "chambers" is used to refer to both the physical facilities where the barristers' set conducts the majority of their business as well as the "set," which is an unincorporated organisation itself. This is because the term "chambers" is used to refer to both of these things.

i) Judge in Chambers

Unlike proceedings in open court, Judge in Chambers proceedings are confidential, and they do not involve any oral arguments or courtroom drama. Instead, attorneys communicate with the judge via written pleadings and requests, which the judge then reviews and decides on. This type of process allows for quicker resolution of legal disputes without the need for a lengthy trial. Judge in Chambers proceedings are a vital part of the legal system, ensuring efficiency and fairness in resolving issues out of public view.

II) Barristers Chambers

Barristers Chambers are professional associations formed by a group of barristers who come together to share resources and provide legal services to clients. Members of Chambers share office space, administrative staff, library and research facilities, and other amenities. By pooling resources, Chambers allow barristers to undertake more complex cases and provide a diverse range of legal services to their clients. Moreover, Chambers foster a sense of community and provide opportunities for professional development through networking and collaboration with colleagues.
