De facto

De facto meaning

De facto is a legal word that means "in fact" or "in reality" and is used to qualify many different legal ideas, even when the formal legal standards have not been satisfied. This is because de facto is derived from Latin and means "in fact" or "in reality." The term "de facto law" refers to any legal practise or formality that is not expressly stated by a particular statute. It indicates that it does in fact exist, despite the fact that its existence may not be planned, authorised, or acknowledged.
