A GUIDELINE FOR REFERENCING SYSTEM OF ESSAY WRITING

WHAT IS AN ESSAY REFERENCING SYSTEM?

It is essential to use an essay referencing system, which is apparent when writing any academic piece, whether it be an essay, dissertation or thesis, or review. You can use various methods to do this, although the decision may be made for you which one to adopt. However, few publishers will clarify how their task must be mentioned or cited. Certain universities and colleges may have guidelines for the method students should use. However, it would be beneficial to be aware of the various essay referencing methods. The article in question is part of a series that looks at the most important parts of each essay referencing system and suggests ways to use them.

Let's start by discussing the basics of an essay referencing system and why it is important to use it.

WHAT ARE VARIOUS ESSAY REFERENCING SYSTEMS/METHODS?

Sorry to say there is no a'single' or standard method for essay referencing (would not that be convenient and easy?!). However, the majority of scholars use one of these systems, which are the following (nowadays the most popular in the USA and the UK).

  • The Harvard system (sometimes called the Author-Date system).

  • Chicago

  • The American Psychological Association (APA)

  • The Modern Language Association of America (MLA)

  • MHRA stands for Modern Humanities Research Association.

There has been a tendency to use methods like Harvard (or "Author-Date") in recent years. This system has some features like brief references within a text (in brackets), in contrast to methods that prefer footnotes or endnotes. These are either complete citations to sources at the page's bottom or endnotes with complete references at the end of the page. But the number of citations can be different depending on the topic and the university.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF WRITING ESSAYS WITH A REFERENCING SYSTEM?

One thing that is necessary to understand is that when you use a text or academic concept from another author, you must give appropriate credit to him.

This not only improves your reputation when talking about your topic but also makes sure no one can say you stole someone else's ideas.

WHICH TYPE OF DETAILS DO I NEED TO REFERENCE CORRECTLY?

Careful reference collecting will improve your essay writing abilities, although it may not be a clear step in the writing process. It should be something you do as soon as you can and not something you have to do immediately after an event. Here, it means you constantly do as you can rather than something you hurry to achieve after the fact.

As a general rule, we advise that you keep a separate piece of paper with you when researching or writing your essay. Also, make sure to note down the following information as you need it:

  • The name of the author (or editor)

  • The version (if it is not the first).

  • The year and the city in which it was published

  • The work's title

  • The name of the publication

  • If it is an article or essay, it consists of the title, page numbers, and other relevant information like volume number

  • If the source is an electronic one, such as a website, give the electronic address of the source and the date it was used.

  • Do not forget to include the number of the page; however, be aware if you're direct quoting from the source.

OSCOLA GENERATOR

OSCOLA stands for the Oxford Standard for Citation of Legal Authorities, which is a specific referencing system used to provide accurate and consistent citations in legal writing. This system was developed by the Oxford University Law Faculty and is widely recognized as the standard in the UK and many other countries. OSCOLA provides guidelines for citing legal materials such as cases, legislation, books, and journals in footnotes or endnotes and in the bibliography or reference list. The citation rules are complex and require precise attention to details such as the punctuation, abbreviations, and order of information. However, following OSCOLA ensures that your legal writing is professional, reliable, and respectful of the sources you rely on.
